Protein is a chain of amino acid which is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen & nitrogen.
There are three types of Amino Acids present in the protein:
- Essential Amino Acid
- Non Essential Amino Acid
- Conditionally Essential Amino Acid
ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID: This is amino acid which body cannot synthesize & must come from diet which is compulsory in diet. A group of 3 amino acid are also known as branched chain amino acid.
9 Essential amino acids name are: Histidine , Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophan and Valine.
NON-ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID: Body can synthesize these group of amino acid and not essential to the human diet.
11 Non-essential amino acids: Alanine, Arginine, Asparagine, Aspartic acid, Cysteine, Glutamic Acid, Glutamine, Glycine, Proline, Serine and Tryosine.
CONDITIONALLY ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID: This amino acid is compulsory under special condition such as exercise, burns or cancer etc. Body makes them but not in enough quantity.
2 conditionally essential amino acids are Glutamine & Arginine.
FUNCTION OF PROTEIN:
There are different function of protein:
b. Muscle contraction.
c. Structure to the body as hair, skin and nails.
d. Immunity – (Immuno globulins)
e. Transport of nutrients (Haemoglobin) . Lipoprotein is the transporter of fat.
f. Hormones & Enzymes.
